DR. MARTENS PRESENTS:
RAISSA PARDINI

Raissa Pardini is one of most in-demand visual designers in the industry. Dr. Martens commissioned the Glasgow-based artist to create a one-off, 1460-influenced poster. The only one made, we gave you a chance to be the sole owner by holding a raffle to raise money for Raissa’s chosen charity Women’s Aid.

It was £5 per entry – which is the cost of a Live Chat between a Women’s Aid support worker and a woman experiencing domestic abuse. All donations from the raffle will support women reaching out to this lifesaving service.

You can find out more about the charity below.

Each Live Chat between a Women’s Aid support worker and a woman experiencing domestic abuse costs roughly £5. Donations to the raffle will support a woman reaching out to their lifesaving service.

WHO IS RAISSA PARDINI?

Big posters. Bold colours. Glasgow-based Raissa is making waves. She’s one of the most in-demand designers in the indie music scene. And she’s worked with some of the biggest artists in the game. Blending eye-catching typography with designs that could easily be mistaken for artwork, she pushes herself further with every piece she works on. With every piece having its own unique identity, it’s not hard to see how her illustrations are taking over.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve worked together. Raissa designed the poster that was given away to people at the Clyde Built Radio launch party, and created a poster that was sold at the Mystery Jets Boot Room gig to raise money for lead singer Blaine’s charity, ‘Attitude is Everything’.

DM’S CHATS WITH RAISSA PARDINI
We catch up with the Glasgow-based artist and talk about inspiration, music and what self-expression means to her.

What influences your work? Do you find inspiration in any unexpected places?

Sometimes I find myself researching on a computer all day long. Internet is definitely the place where I gather most of my inspirations. Buildings and architecture in general really inspire some of the shapes I create. Old books of typography are my favourite thing to look at when I'm trying to squeeze my brain and come up with something.

Tell us about your favourite pair of Docs. What would your dream pair of Docs look like?

I bought my first pair of boots when I was 14 years old and they are still going. Though my favourite are my white 6 holes. They have so much attitude and they would go with anything! A few vegan options are currently on my wish list: Chelsea boots, Blaire strap sandals and a new pair of classic 1461 shoes.

How do you style your Docs?

I actually get dressed first then I go and pick the right shoe! As if the shoes will refine the style I had in mind.

Favourite venue?

Gosh, so many... I'd say Covo Club in Bologna nd Plastic in Milan and my picks for UK would be Norwich Art Centre in Norwich, Mono in Glasgow, Moth Club in London and YES in Manchester. I love Baby's Alright in NY too as it is similar to the type of venue I like. Hotel Vegas in Austin is also incredible.

What does Dr. Martens mean to you?

I've always been wearing DMs and I've always thought they'd go along with my style. Either if I was jumping on stage with my band or in the studio painting, I'd regularly wear a pair of Docs.

What does self-expression mean to you?

It's a power thing that makes us unique from anyone else. I don't take this freedom of expression from granted and I feel grateful to be able to share my experience, art and messages. I often design messages from the communities that I support that express my ethics and the things that are important to me. I stand for equalities and a better world and I always make sure my self-expression is filled with that.

What motivated you more to be where you are now: the people who said ‘you can’t do this’ or the people who said ‘you can’?

I don't think acknowledging the difficulty of doing something is a sign of weakness but I'm usually the kind of person that would go for it and try. Mistakes do bring you a whole new way of making art.
