ON SHOOT WITH RACHEL WILLIAMS

OUR PASTELS GO ON TOUR

Heading into London for a pre-festival warm-up, stylist and content creator Rachel Williams straps into our pastel Voss and Blaire sandals for a summer styling tour. We chat to the creative all-rounder about freelancing, staying inspired and turning your passion into a career.

"I’M A 360 CREATIVE - I DON’T ASSIGN MYSELF A SPECIFIC JOB ROLE"

I started out in the fashion industry as a styling assistant. As a freelancer it’s hard to assign myself a singular job role — what I’m working on can differ day-to-day. I style for brand campaigns, create concepts for activations, art direct, model (when I fancy it) and I taught myself how to edit in lockdown.

DURING LOCKDOWN, I ACCIDENTALLY CAUSED A SHIFT IN MY CAREER DIRECTION

Being stuck inside for so long, I started imagining little concepts to pass the time — and to exercise my brain. Instagram had also just launched Reels — which inspired me to start creating ‘behind-the-scenes access’ type content. I cultivated a small following of people who were interested in what I was shooting, my references and how they could do it themselves. My DIY lockdown phase started attracting the attention of brands — and transformed into a full-time career.

I’ve just bought my first property — which has taken over my summer a bit. Adult life. But there’s time for a few more festivals. I flew in from Spain at 3am and was at Strawberries and Creem festival by midday. I was already wearing my summer go-to (DM’s, cute little top and boy shorts) so I went straight to Cambridge and spent half the day watching my mates at the Girls Can’t DJ stage. Call me bias but it was the best stage there. Ludacris was good too. The rain, however — was not.
