For 50 years, London jeweller The Great Frog has adorned the hands, necks and wrists of subcultural rebels and outlaws worldwide. Music and rebellion are stitched into Dr. Martens boots as deeply as they are engraved in The Great Frog’s statement jewellery. For the first time, we’ve collaborated on a hardware-inspired collection to pay homage to our shared history of subversion.

SUBCULTURAL CONNECTIVITY BEHIND THE SCENES

SIT DOWN WITH THE GREAT FROG’S OWNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR REINO LEHTONEN-RILEY AND DM’s GLOBAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR DARREN MCKOY (KNOWN AS DMAC)

What do you think connects Dr. Martens and The Great Frog?

Reino: It’s one of those collaborations that just makes sense — it writes itself. It’s so iconic. It feels like it was already set in stone when we started out in the early 70s. You see generations of people wearing both — DM’s on the feet, The Great Frog on the hands. It’s almost a uniform.

How did you decide how the collection would look?

DMac: The essence of this collaboration is a DIY customisation narrative that’s very true to Dr. Martens and The Great Frog. We wanted to utilise Reino’s creativity and bring his point of view to the product — the attention to detail is all over both boots: like the eyelets on the 1460 boot and the harness detail on the Jadon.

Reino: I wanted to nod to our shared heritage: the soul of Camden in Dr. Martens and the rock, biker hardness that people tend to associate with The Great Frog — even though we’re all lovely. I wanted the boots to look tough, with attitude. And the Oily Illusion leather is perfect because it allowed me to design and think about how these boots will look worn in. Like the perfect leather jacket once you’ve been in the mosh pit or scraped it on the motorbike. The rites of passage that come from breaking in.

Music is a massive part of DM’s and The Great Frog’s heritage — how much does that connection influence you?

DMac: Music is the heartbeat of Dr. Martens. Pete Townshend in the 60s through to people like Rico Nasty today. Through the decades, generations of wearers have existed across different music genres. Dr. Martens has been a constant. It’s about self-expression. What makes this a unique collaborative relationship is that it captures energy permeating worldwide — drawing on a rich heritage informed by the London music scene.

Reino: Music is one of the primary influences on everything we do at The Great Frog. There’s always music in the workshops — and it comes out on the bench. If you’re listening to heavy music all day, that’s what comes out of your hands — it’s not even a conscious decision. You’re listening to something brutal and suddenly making massive skulls and chains. It’s part of our DNA.
