Introduce yourself.

I'm Lauren, I go by they/them. I'm a human and art-maker based in Los Angeles. I like bats and overthinking...

What is your preferred medium?

High-pressure spray paint.

What was your first job?
My first job was working in a pirate store that was a front for a creative writing program for youth (826 Valencia). I spent most of my time making custom eye-patches and dropping fishnets from the ceiling on unsuspecting customers.

Tell us about the materials and techniques you’re using.
First, strip the sealer with leather deglazer or acetone. I then sketch the image lightly with a bright color, and do color fills, making sure to do multiple layers for full opacity. Finally, I'll do linework with a fine brush and seal the work with an acrylic finisher.

What was the inspiration behind the designs you created for DIY Docs?

I adapted some images from my tattoo flash. You can never go wrong with psychedelic freakazoid femmes.

Tell us about your first pair of Docs.
My first pair of Docs were knee-high teal green babies, found on a trip to Italy when I was 14 or so. I wore them to the Uffizi and one of the security guards told me I looked like "Skater Bjork," and I have not received a better compliment since.
