STYLE GUIDE: AUTUMN

As the temperature dips and the layers come out, gray weather calls for jackets to throw on, knitwear to huddle under and boots to keep it all grounded. Autumn brings a new energy to getting dressed: suddenly, there's room to play with texture, proportions and all the pieces that spent summer shoved to the back of the wardrobe.

Layering season is officially here and we've teamed up with layers-loving stylist Jordan Dean Schneider to play with ways to pair your Doc's. No micro trends or wardrobe overhauls, just easy ideas to rework what you already own.

Whether it's a worn-out striped shirt, a vintage knit or that perfect pair of jeans you wear on repeat, the best Autumn outfits usually start with the same foundations: good layers, a little texture and a good pair of shoes to tie it together.

Autumnal tones are great together: mossy greens, tobacco browns, washed greys and faded reds all muddled into one earthy palette. Wear brighter knits under heavier outerwear and contrast hoodies against tailoring to keep tonal dressing feeling fresh. Finish it all with a pair of Doc’s - like Smooth Leather Brogues - to keep things grounded, the heavier soles adding structure to softer shapes and layered silhouettes.

There's no need to be scared of a statement. Checks look great layered together, so clash similar tones and treat them like a neutral. Think checked shirts under cropped jackets, loose hems peeking out beneath outerwear and polished Docs – like the Lowell in Cherry Red - worn with chunky socks for that back-to-art-school energy.

Angular skirts, oversized outerwear and technical fabrics instantly make even the simplest looks feel more directional. You could lean into something slightly futuristic: part utilitarian, part cyber-punk, but simple and stripped back enough for everyday. A heavier pair of Docs – like the Anistone Pull-On - works well against sharper lines and sculptural shapes, making the whole thing feel uncomplicated and wearable, just as it should be.

Once color and texture are taken care of, the cut and length of a shirt can make all the difference. Style a longer shirt underneath a chunky cardigan or pair cleaner, straight-leg trousers with heavier boots – like the Vintage 1460 Quilon boot - for a subtle nod to ’90s grunge and West Coast skater style.

Let texture do the heavy lifting. Ruffled sleeves, distressed leather, eyelets, heavy cotton and soft knits, the more contrast, the better. Balance feminine shapes with tougher details: softer silhouettes instantly feel exciting with heavier boots underneath. Textured Docs – like the Buzz Hi in snakeskin- or anything with a little attitude add the perfect romantic-punk edge.

When autumn rolls around, sometimes you just want to be comfortable. Thick wool knits, brushed fabrics, and soft layers all feel right at home in an autumn wardrobe. But when comfort is key, the devil’s in the details. Rich colors, good proportions, a shirt sleeve peeking out from under a knit. A pair of sturdy Docs — like the Lowell Orleans — toughen things up slightly, giving your cozy an undone edge.

If you think of clothes as building blocks, you can’t go wrong with a really good pair of boots. Add a little color to your footwear – like these 1460 Rain Boots - and let the rest of the outfit stay easy: vintage denim, oversized tees, softer shades and lived-in layers.

Striped shirts work well oversized, paired with vintage cricket jumpers and stonewashed denim to keep things easy. The trick is balancing the polished pieces with something a little heavier. Throw in a pair of Docs – like the 1461 in Crazy Horse Leather - and the old school references come together without feeling stuffy. Think less Head Boy, more stomping around New York in the ’90s.
