Meg Temple-Wells crafts punk zines in sartorial form. Whether in her own designs or as print designer and studio assistant at Chopova Lowena, she makes clothes that are an emo-girly-girl's dreams made real.
For the 65th anniversary of our 1461 shoe we looked to showcase modern craftspeople who live and breathe the ethos of the shoe: quiet innovators focusing on function to create something beautiful and unique.
She told us about her work, inspirations, and dream dinner party guests.
My life revolves around clothes and dressing up. Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to surround myself with fabrics, color, and pattern.
CRAFT
I was lucky enough to be taught how to sew by my Grandma, which kickstarted my love of making, from drawing and printing to crocheting and all sorts.
CREATIVE PROCESS
I've always immersed myself in music, comics, photography books, old magazines, animation, and movies. That's where I draw inspiration for prints and graphics. I love that clothes can be a form of visual communication, as well as a way to make yourself feel awesome.
METHOD
I don't think watching movies, cartoons, and listening to music is too unusual, which is what I like about making things, it feels very natural to me. I'm constantly looking at and studying the things I love. I've always been a collector and have built up a library of books, posters, T-shirts, and objects over the years.
INSPIRATION
I'm constantly in awe of my friends. I'm surrounded by incredibly motivated and talented people, and I feel very lucky to be regularly visiting friends' exhibitions and watching them perform.
RELAXATION
I'm currently trying to learn bass guitar. It's been my lifelong dream to be in a band, and over Christmas I had a spontaneous moment and bought a pink one off Vinted. It's been great to throw myself into learning something new, even if I'm not very good yet.
WORST FASHION MOMENT
No fashion era is ever the worst. The best part of fashion is discovering what to wear next.
DREAM DINNER PARTY
Iggy Pop. Enid Coleslaw from Ghost World. Debbie Harry. Courtney Love. Daft Punk. Marceline from Adventure Time. Strawberry Switchblade. Madonna. Lou Reed. The list could go on forever…
