DR. MARTENS x THE INSTITUTE
OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS

A LANDMARK PARTNERSHIP
PROVIDING 7 GRANTS TO SUPPORT
EMERGING ARTISTS

DM’s has always been a symbol for the emerging artists of the day. The under-represented voices. The experimental creatives. The pavement-stomping, stage-taking, era-defining, ground-breaking rebels.

Now, alongside the ICA, a leading voice for minority and queer creatives and home to progressive culture in London since 1946, we’re offering you the opportunity to apply for one of seven grants dedicated to helping support emerging and under-represented artists. The grants are open to everyone and will help fund projects dedicated to forward-thinking design and moving image, providing a stepping stone for struggling artists at a time they need it most.

We’re committing to the following:

+ £60,000 in production grants for new work in artists’ moving image

+ The awards are broken down into one grant worth £30,000, and six worth £5,000, alongside dedicated mentorship and production support for all successful applicants

+ Any UK-based artist can apply through an open call from 17th February to 30th March

+ The work will be premiered at Image Behaviour, the ICA’s annual convening dedicated to artists’ moving image festival, in October 2021

At a time of increasing budget cuts and a lack of creative spaces, it’s never been harder for under-represented voices to break into the art world. Providing that support is more vital now than in the six decades since the first DM’s boot rolled off the production line and became the hallmark of rebellious subculture the world over.
