CREATING AN ICON: THE 1460 BOOT

1 April 1960 — The first Dr. Martens boot rolls off the factory line, and Bill Griggs names it 1460 to honour the date of its creation.

Along with his wider footwear collection, Griggs brought the 1460 boot to a major Tradeshow the following week, ready to take orders for the summer production months.

The 8-eye boot is distinctive and instantly recognisable: yellow welt stitching, a grooved sole edge, Puritan chain stitching, and a black and yellow heel loop with the AirWair name. To this day, we still use the AirWair font, which is based on Bill’s own handwriting.
