With Dr. Martens' factory history being so rich, it is very tempting to offer materials that are inspired by that industrial heritage. Dr. Martens is proud to continue its association with one of the oldest silk mills in Europe, Stephen Walters & Sons, who have been in the silk trade since 1720. Like Dr. Martens, Stephen Walters and Sons enjoy a long-established reputation fuelled by their continued use of traditional methods and expertise passed down through many generations to produce bespoke products of the highest quality.
- 3 Eyelet Shoe
- Black Geometric Silk a high-quality, bespoke silk pattern woven in the Stephen Walters family mill in Suffolk, England
- Leather-welted, the upper and sole are sewn together
- Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole
This is a Goodyear-welted product using leather for the welt. The upper and sole are sewn together, not merely glued, like many footwear constructions. This, together with our Z welt-stitch and heat-sealing process, makes it unique to Dr. Martens. This is the only construction that is stitched on the outside and helps footwear take the shape to the foot. The welt is chain stitched to the upper and insole. The outsole is then sewn to the welt around the edge and then heat sealed. This is the sturdiest and most complex of all constructions.
Silk - is a silk made in England by Stephen Walters. The history of Stephen Walters & Sons Ltd starts in Spitalfields, London at the end of the 17th century and they continue to manufacture silks today for all manner of purposes.
The original Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, providing underfoot comfort and durability since 1960. It is oil- and fat-resistant, tough and offers good abrasion and slip resistance.
